Data Migration is the process of transferring data between storage types, formats, or computer systems. Data migration is usually performed programmatically to achieve an automated migration, freeing up human resources from tedious tasks. It is required when organizations or individuals change computer systems or upgrade to new systems, or when systems merge (such as when the organizations that use them undergo a merger/takeover).

Basically Data migration is the process of importing data to a new system. This can involve entering the data manually, moving disk files from one folder (or computer) to another, database insert queries, developing custom software, or other methods.

Data Migration Process

Data migration process occur when computer systems change or upgrade to new systems, or when systems merge (such as when the organizations that use them undergo a merger or takeover). Effectively migrating data requires extracting data from existing systems, mapping data from an old system to the new, loading the data into the new system, and then verifying the data in the new system to ensure it was accurately translated, is complete, and supports processes in the new system.

Data migration is necessary when a company upgrades its database or system application, either from one version to another or from one program to an entirely different program. Application can be specifically written, using entire programs or just scripts, to facilitate data migration. Data migration typically has four phases: analysis of source data, extraction and transformation of data, validation and repair of data, and use of data in the new program.

Generally there are two types of data migration, the storage data migration to address a server or database upgrade, requiring little or no data transformation. The application data migration addresses an application replacement, upgrade or consolidation, and requires a significant amount of data transformation. You may be moving to a new version of your application, or consolidating a single view of customer database following an acquisition.
